On Feb. 21, 1965, the former Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X was shot and killed by assassins identified as Black Muslims as he was about to address the Organization of Afro-American Unity at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. He was 39.
Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little in 1925, was the son of a preacher rumored to have been killed by white supremacists when Malcolm was young. When he was 13, his mother was placed in a mental hospital, and he lived in a series of foster homes. A focused student, he finished junior high at the top of his class. But he left school after a favorite teacher told Malcolm that his dream of becoming a lawyer was “no realistic goal” for a black student (the teacher, however, used an ethnic slur while making the comment). Malcolm then moved to Boston to live with his half-sister. In 1946, he went to prison for breaking and entering. He joined the Nation of Islam while in prison and adopted his new name upon his release in 1952.
Malcolm X rose quickly in the organization and traveled the country preaching the message of the Black Muslims, including the belief that blacks were superior to whites, that blacks and whites should be segregated and that blacks must protect themselves “by any means necessary.” A charismatic speaker, he won thousands of converts.
However, his inflammatory oratory put him in opposition to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the mainstream civil rights movement, which sought integration with white America through nonviolent means. Malcolm X often belittled Dr. King, calling him an “Uncle Tom” who was supported by whites and argued that Dr. King’s Christian faith was a religion for whites.
In 1964, Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam and converted to traditional Islam. He made a pilgrimage to Mecca, where he began to question his beliefs after seeing Muslims of all races coming together in peace. He changed his name to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and upon his return to the United States began espousing less confrontational and separatist views on race relations.
I’m celebrating his legacy along with Black History Month by remembering perhaps Malcolm’s most famous words: “We declare our rights on this earth to be a man, to be a human being, to be respected as a human being, to be given the rights of a human being, in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!”
The style and flow are almost unrecognizable.
According to the Daily News, Singer Robin Thicke was arrested in Manhattan for marijuana possession.
The award-winning R&B crooner was arrested at 12:25 p.m. by patrol officers who saw him smoking a joint while sitting in a Cadillac Escalade near 3rd Ave. and E. 21st St.
“He wasn’t driving,” a police source said. “He was sitting in the car. He was arrested and a small amount of marijuana was recovered on him.”
Thicke, 34, was in the Escalade with another person, the source said, but Thicke was the only one arrested and then charged with posession of marijuana.
It wasn’t clear where Thicke was heading, though he did provide police with a lower East Side address.
Thicke is married to actress Paula Patton. The singer’s fifth studio album, “Love After War,” was released in December.
Thicke’s father is actor Alan Thicke, who is best known for playing Jason Seaver in “Growing Pains.”
Earlier this year, Nick Cannon was hospitalized for mild kidney failure but was released a few days later. However, that visit was most likely the start of more hospital visits. According to The Jasmine Brand, Cannon revealed on his radio show 92.3 Now FM yesterday that he was back at the hospital last week with two blood clots and an enlarged right ventricle.
“It was quite serious. I was trying to downplay it a lot, even in my own mind,” said the 31-year-old entertainer. “I travel a lot. Anyone who flies a lot can be a victim to getting blood clots because it can start in your legs or your lower back. That, on top of my previous condition made me more prone to it.”
Cannon added that the doctor recommended more rest.
“My doctor was saying that my work is going to kill me — and he’s not joking. I think part of the reason why my health did kind of deteriorate was because I wasn’t resting a lot and I was doing too much. I was overworking myself, working out too much. I always took pride in working so hard and never taking a day off. But i’m learning that it isn’t the wisest thing all the time, especially being a new father. Not only wanting to spend more time with my children, but wanting to be there for my children.”
Cannon juggles multiple jobs. He’s the chairman of TeenNick, runs his own record label, produces TV, hosts America’s Got Talent, has his radio show and he’s the father of twins. He also wants to add a new movie, which he describes as today’s version of House Party, to his to do list.
Wow, I hope Nick gets better soon. All the money in the world isn’t as valuable as your good health.
I’m posting this one for a couple reasons:
1. The way she says “Baby Fawva” priceless
2. “Star 69″ LOL
3. She reminds me of Chrissy a lil bit
Bobby Brown is “extremely disappointed” after hearing that several members of Whitney Houston‘s family do not want him to attend the singer’s funeral … sources tell TMZ.
Sources close to Bobby tell us … people connected to the Houston family have reached out to Bobby to warn him that he shouldn’t attempt to attend the funeral because the family isn’t fond of him.
However … we’re told Bobby has not received any OFFICIAL word from the family about his invite status.
Sources tell us … Bobby WANTS to attend the funeral so he can support his daughter Bobbi Kristina, but he hasn’t decided on a plan of action yet.
There’s a lot of bad blood between Whitney’s family and Bobby Brown, because they believe he was the driving negative force in her life that led her down the substance abuse path. They also believe he’s largely responsible for Bobbi Kristina’s drug and alcohol struggles.
What do ya’ll think. Is Whitney’s family being unreasonable? Does Bobby have a right to attend the funeral of his ex-wife and mother of his daughter?
